Buy at or near the bottom of a price cycle — usually after prices have been falling for several days. In Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth, midweek is often cheaper than weekends during the trough phase. The ACCC updates buying tips three times per week.
Avoid filling up in the first 1–3 days after a price spike. Darwin, Hobart and Canberra do not have formal price cycles — shopping around is the primary tool in those cities.

What Drives Fuel Prices in Australia
Four key factors determine what you pay at the pump.
International benchmark prices are the single largest component. Australian petrol is priced against the Singapore Mogas 95 benchmark — when global crude oil prices rise (as they have sharply in early 2026 due to Middle East tensions), Australian pump prices follow within 1–2 weeks.
The AUD/USD exchange rate matters because petrol is priced in US dollars internationally. A weaker Australian dollar makes imported fuel more expensive. A stronger dollar provides some buffer against rising global prices.
Retail margins and price cycles are the layer that Australian motorists can actually influence. Retailers set prices independently, creating the cycles ACCC monitoring tracks. The gap between the terminal gate price (what retailers pay wholesale) and the pump price reflects retail operating costs and margin.
Fuel excise is a fixed component of every litre — currently 50.8 cents per litre for unleaded petrol, set by the federal government and indexed to CPI. It does not change with market conditions but comprises roughly a quarter of the total pump price.
